Mia Bonta

Democratic

State Assembly · Assembly District 18

In office
2021–present
BiographyReporting (Tier 3) · reviewed

Mia Bonta’s public path includes Oakland Promise, the Alameda School Board and, since 2021, the state Assembly. She is the CEO of Oakland Promise, the nonprofit cradle-to-college support program focused on the city’s low-income students. Voters first put her in office on the school board, then sent her to represent the 18th Assembly District. The Assembly campaign brought opponents’ claims about her family connections and campaign money, followed by a runoff victory. In the Assembly, she is a member of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus.

BACKGROUND AND FORMATION

Mialisa Tania Bonta, née Villafañe, was born Jan. 26, 1972, in New York City. Her parents were Puerto Rican, and some of her ancestors came to Puerto Rico from Ghana through the Atlantic slave trade. She was the daughter of a divorced working mother in the Bronx.

Bonta attended Yale University, where she met Rob Bonta as a freshman. She later earned a Master of Education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and attended Yale Law School with Rob Bonta. The two have three children. Their daughter Reina is a filmmaker and a soccer player for the Brazilian club Santos FC and the Philippines national team.

Her work at Oakland Promise placed her in a local institution with a defined constituency and a long timetable: children moving from their earliest years toward college. Its stated focus is low-income students in Oakland. It is the substantive non-electoral work identified in her record.

THE PATH TO OFFICE

Bonta was elected to the Alameda School Board in 2018. Three years later, she ran in the special election for the state Assembly’s 18th District. She finished first in the primary with 38% of the vote, then defeated human rights attorney Janani Ramachandran in the runoff, 56% to 44%.

During the special-election campaigns, opponents claimed that Bonta benefited from her husband’s position and name. They also pointed to money she received from gambling interests, saying it may have been intended to influence Rob Bonta. Those claims made campaign financing and the Bonta name part of the campaigns.

The result gave Mia Bonta her second elected position in three years: first an educational office, then a legislative one. She has represented the 18th District in the California State Assembly since 2021.

THE POLICY SIGNATURE

Bonta’s most clearly documented area of work is education, particularly the institutional support available to students from low-income Oakland families. Oakland Promise works from cradle to college; the Alameda School Board gave her an elected role in education governance. Those are the two concrete pieces of her record that identify both the policy field and the people at its center.

Her Assembly record, as presented here, does not identify a particular bill, budget provision or vote as a signature achievement. Her membership in the California Legislative Progressive Caucus locates her within an organized legislative group, while her work with Oakland Promise involved a program focused on low-income students in Oakland.

Her electoral career has included opponents’ claims about her husband’s position and name and money from gambling interests. Her documented public work includes educational governance and a cradle-to-college support program focused on low-income students. Together, those facts describe the campaign questions raised during her path to the Assembly and the constituency served by Oakland Promise.
