For voters in Assembly District 49, Mike Fong’s public life includes several forms of Los Angeles County public service. Before joining the California State Assembly, he was a councilman’s aide, a deputy mayor and a member of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. He entered the Legislature through a special election called to replace Assemblymember Ed Chau, who resigned after being nominated to the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Fong was sworn in in February 2022.

ROOTS

Fong was born on February 29, 1976. He graduated from Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School and attended East Los Angeles College.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Northridge. His higher-education background therefore includes East Los Angeles College, UCLA and California State University, Northridge.

Before joining the Assembly, Fong was a member of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. That board service was among the various positions he held in Los Angeles County before his election to the Legislature.

THE PATH TO OFFICE

Before his election to the Legislature, Fong served in various positions in Los Angeles County. Those positions included work as a councilman’s aide, service as a deputy mayor and membership on the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees.

Fong reached the Assembly through the 2022 special election to replace Ed Chau. Chau resigned after being nominated to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Fong was sworn in on February 22, 2022. His pre-Assembly background included local government positions and community college district board service in Los Angeles County.

THE THROUGH LINE

Fong’s documented pre-Assembly experience includes service as a deputy mayor, a councilman’s aide and a member of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees.
