Michelle Rodriguez

Democratic

State Assembly · Assembly District 53

In office
2024–present
BiographyReporting (Tier 3) · reviewed

Michelle Rodriguez was raised in Ontario and now lives in Pomona. Elected in 2024, she succeeded her husband, Freddie Rodriguez, who was term-limited. She came to the race with prior service on a statewide law-enforcement commission and strong business support. Her legislative priorities included advancing universal healthcare, addressing homelessness and improving education.

ROOTS

Rodriguez was born April 17, 1979, and raised in Ontario. She graduated from Northwest College. She lives in Pomona with Freddie Rodriguez, the former assemblymember, and they have four children.

Her background includes an Ontario upbringing, a Pomona household and a family connection to the Assembly seat. In 2024, she ran to succeed Freddie Rodriguez, who was term-limited. She entered the contest with previous service on a California commission.

BEFORE THE ASSEMBLY

Before her election, Rodriguez served on the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. That commission service preceded her election to the Assembly.

In the Assembly race, Rodriguez was running to succeed her husband in the same seat. She brought both a direct connection to the outgoing assemblymember and prior service on a California commission. In the general election, she faced a Republican opponent.

THE PATH TO OFFICE

Rodriguez entered the 2024 race with strong business support and emerged as the frontrunner. She went on to defeat a Republican opponent in the general election and win the 53rd District seat.

The contest also involved another family connection to the Assembly seat. Rodriguez’s victory blocked Robert Torres from claiming a seat previously held by his mother, Norma Torres. Rodriguez sought to follow her term-limited husband, while Torres sought a seat once occupied by his mother.

Rodriguez prevailed and became the district’s elected representative after her husband. She entered the Assembly with prior commission service, strong business support during her campaign and a set of stated legislative priorities.

THE POLICY SIGNATURE

Rodriguez identified three legislative priorities: advancing universal healthcare, addressing homelessness and improving education.

Her campaign had strong business support. Her legislative agenda included universal healthcare, homelessness and education, while her service on the peace-officer standards commission was part of her experience before entering the Legislature.

Rodriguez’s documented background includes an Ontario upbringing, a Pomona home and service on the peace-officer standards commission. In 2024, she succeeded her husband in the Assembly after a campaign with strong business support, and her legislative priorities included advancing universal healthcare, addressing homelessness and improving education.
