Portrait of Greg Wallis

Greg Wallis

Republican

State Assembly · Assembly District 47

In office
2022–present
BiographyReporting (Tier 3) · reviewed

Greg Wallis arrived before District 47 voters through a contest that remained unsettled with each new count. In 2022, he and Democratic candidate Christy Holstege repeatedly exchanged leads in the newly redrawn district. By December 12, Holstege had lost by 85 votes and conceded. Wallis had come to that race after working for Assemblymember Chad Mayes, first becoming Mayes’ district director in 2014. On the documented record, the narrow election and the rematch that followed have defined his public career more clearly than any policy fight.

THE JOB BEFORE THE JOB

Born May 15, 1990, Wallis studied political science at California Lutheran University. His early professional record moved among communications, taxpayer advocacy and legislative work. He worked as an account executive for Mann Communications and served as executive director of the Inland Empire Taxpayer’s Association.

In 2014, Wallis became district director for Assemblymember Chad Mayes. The position placed him in an elected official’s district operation eight years before his 2022 candidacy. The record does not identify particular legislation, constituent matters or campaigns that Wallis handled in that role, but the job is the central institutional fact documented about his career before his own election.

That connection also figured directly in the timing of his candidacy. Wallis announced his campaign in February 2022, after Mayes declined to seek reelection. He entered the race for the newly redrawn district after Mayes’ decision.

TWO CLOSE RACES

Wallis finished second in the 2022 primary, trailing Holstege, and advanced to face her in the general election. Holstege led in the initial returns. As additional votes were counted, the candidates traded the lead, leaving the district without a settled result until December.

By December 12, Holstege had lost by 85 votes and conceded. That margin was not the end of their contest. In April 2023, Holstege announced that she would run against Wallis again.

The order changed in the next primary: Wallis placed first, ahead of Holstege. Their general-election rematch ended with Wallis winning 51% to 49%. His documented electoral history is therefore concentrated in a single rivalry: two primaries, two general elections and two victories over the same opponent, first by 85 votes and then by a two-percentage-point margin.

THE POLICY RECORD

Wallis’ documented career supplies a clear map of how he reached office, but not a comparable map of how he has used it. His experience includes communications work, service as executive director of a taxpayer organization and work as a district director. Those are the identifiable professional and institutional connections in the record.

No specific bills, committee assignments, appointments, budget actions, causes or votes are identified. That leaves no documented basis for naming a policy signature or describing a particular constituency as the beneficiary of his work in office. The Inland Empire Taxpayer’s Association is the only named advocacy organization in his professional history, but no particular position or legislative action is attached to that service.

For District 47 voters, the established record is thus electoral and administrative rather than legislative: an Assembly staff position beginning in 2014, a candidacy after Mayes declined to seek reelection, an 85-vote victory in the newly redrawn district and a 51%-to-49% win in the rematch.
