Petrie-Norris was first elected to the Assembly in November 2018, representing the 74th Assembly District. She defeated Republican Matthew Harper, the previous incumbent, to win that first term.
In 2020, she won a second term by a very narrow margin over Diane Dixon, then the mayor of Newport Beach. That contest was one of four Assembly elections in which Petrie-Norris faced an officeholder or former officeholder.
Redistricting changed the map in 2021. Petrie-Norris moved to Irvine to seek reelection in the newly drawn 73rd Assembly District. She ran against incumbent Republican Assemblymember Steven Choi and defeated him in 2022.
She returned to the ballot in 2024 against Scotty Peotter, a former Newport Beach councilman, and was reelected. Across those election cycles, she went from the 74th District to the 73rd, moving to Irvine following redistricting to seek reelection in the newly drawn district.
